Halloween in Terre Haute: Things to Do Around the Wabash Valley in October 2026
Oct 6, 2026
If there is one thing Terre Haute does well, it is finding an excuse to turn a holiday into approximately 47 different community events.
And Halloween might be one of our best.
As someone who lives here, works here, raises my family here, and spends a whole lot of my life talking about homes in the Wabash Valley, I love getting to share the non-mortgage side of our community too.
So if you’re searching for Halloween events in Terre Haute, Indiana, things to do in Terre Haute in October, or family-friendly Halloween activities in Vigo County, I did some digging for you.
And there is A LOT happening.
Halloween Happenings at Deming Park
Deming Park is basically Halloween headquarters in Terre Haute this year. Terre Haute Parks & Recreation has several events planned throughout October, including its Trunk or Treat, Un-Haunted Halloween Happenings for younger kids, and Haunted Halloween Happenings for the bigger kids and adults who actually enjoy paying money to have someone jump out and scare them. I am not judging. I am simply saying I personally have enough stress watching mortgage rates. The Un-Haunted nights include activities geared toward younger children, while the Haunted nights turn things up with actors and scarier wagon and train rides. If you have kids of different ages, this is definitely one to look into because you can pick the version that fits your family.
Trunk-or-Treats Are EVERYWHERE
If your child's Halloween strategy is primarily based on maximizing candy per mile walked, Terre Haute is apparently the place to be. There are trunk-or-treat events scheduled throughout Vigo County and the surrounding Wabash Valley this October, including events at churches, community organizations, local businesses and other locations around town. There is even a free Trunk or Treat scheduled for Halloween Day at 250 W. Honey Creek Parkway from 1–3 p.m., with candy, games and prizes. Translation: there are plenty of opportunities for your kids to acquire an unreasonable amount of candy before actual trick-or-treating even begins.
Halloween Student Show at Arts Illiana
If haunted houses aren't your thing, this is a really fun local option. Arts Illiana is hosting its Halloween Student Show from October 16 through October 31 at 23 N. 6th Street in downtown Terre Haute. I love seeing events like this on our calendar because they highlight something I think people sometimes overlook about Terre Haute: we have a really active arts and community scene.
It's also an easy activity to work into a downtown Terre Haute afternoon.
Frankenstein Science at the Terre Haute Children's Museum
This one immediately caught my attention as a mom. The Terre Haute Children's Museum is hosting Frankenstein Science on October 24, with hands-on activities involving electricity, the human body, sparks and other appropriately spooky science. It's free for museum members and included with regular admission. Educational AND Halloween themed. We love an activity that makes us feel like responsible parents while our children think they're just doing spooky experiments.
Want Something Actually Scary?
If your definition of Halloween fun requires being legitimately terrified, Terre Haute has you covered there too. Shattered Nightmares Haunted House is located right here in Terre Haute at 1609 Lafayette Avenue and is one of the area's established seasonal haunted attractions. There are also additional haunted attractions and Halloween events throughout the Wabash Valley, so if scares are your thing, you definitely don't have to drive all the way to Indianapolis to make a night of it.
And There Are Even Halloween Events for Adults
Halloween is absolutely not just for kids. There are costume parties, live music, Halloween-themed events and other adult activities happening throughout Terre Haute this month. One example is Halloween Emo Nite at Terre Haute Brewing Company on October 30, featuring live emo and pop-punk music, costumes and plenty of early-2000s nostalgia. So yes, you can take your children trunk-or-treating AND relive your Warped Tour era in the same week.
Balance.
Why I Love Sharing Things Like This
Most of my days are spent talking about mortgage payments, interest rates, credit scores, down payments and getting people into homes. But buying a home isn't just about the house. You're buying into a community. And one of my favorite parts about being a local mortgage lender in Terre Haute is that I genuinely know and love the community I'm lending in.
I grew up in Riley. I'm raising my own family here. I work with buyers and Realtors all over Vigo County and the surrounding Wabash Valley every day. So whether you're already a Terre Haute local, moving to Vigo County, or thinking about buying a home here, I hope you get out and enjoy some of the Halloween fun happening around town this October. And if somewhere between the pumpkin patches and trunk-or-treats you happen to find a house you love?
